Shell opens Europe's largest green hydrogen plant on the Maasvlakte in late 2026

Holland Hydrogen 1 will hold 200 megawatts of electrolysers and produce up to 60,000 kilos of green hydrogen a day, powered by the Hollandse Kust Noord wind farm.
Holland Hydrogen 1, Europe's largest green hydrogen plant, is rising on the Tweede Maasvlakte. Shell is linking ten electrolysers of 20 megawatts each, together good for 200 megawatts.
Production and schedule
The plant is expected to open in late 2026 and, once fully scaled up, can produce up to 60,000 kilos of green hydrogen per day. In March 2026, Holland Hydrogen 1 became the first plant to be connected directly to the hydrogen network.
Green power from the sea
The electricity for the electrolysers comes from Hollandse Kust (Noord), the offshore wind farm partly owned by Shell. Wind energy is converted into green hydrogen this way.
Application
The hydrogen will first go to Shell's refinery in Pernis. After that, other heavy industries can be supplied as well through an underground pipeline, the Delta Rhine Corridor.
Demand for specialists
Building, commissioning and maintaining an installation like this calls for electrical engineers, instrumentation specialists and commissioning experts. Exactly the kind of technical talent the energy transition is crying out for.
